The Greatest Commandments
Matthew 22:37-40 ESV
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the great and first commandment.

And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Verse 2
What did Jesus mean “Teach them to observe everything he commanded them?”

On the internet you can find lists of 49, 50, 147, or 300 commands of Jesus.
Among those teachings were things Jesus said not to do.

The Do Nots of Jesus

#1  Do not presume that your parentage or tradition is all that is required.
Matthew 3:9 ESV Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

Instead
Matthew 3:8 ESV Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.
Matthew 3:8 ERV  Change your hearts! And show by the way you live that you have changed.

#2  Do not take an oath at all.  Matt 5:34
Matthew 5:34-36 ESV
But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,  or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.  And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.

Matthew 5:37 ESV
Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

#3  Do not resist the one who is evil.  Matt 5:39
Matthew 5:38-41 ERV
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.  But I tell you, don't fight back against someone who wants to do harm to you.  If they hit you on the right cheek, let them hit the other cheek too.  If anyone wants to sue you in court and take your shirt, let them have your coat too.  If a soldier forces you to walk with him one mile, go with him two.

Right cheek, left cheek
Sued for damages?  Give them more
They take advantage?  Overwhelm them

Matthew 5:42 ESV
Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Under What Conditions?

# 4  Do not let your left hand know your right hand.
Matthew 6:1-4 ESV
“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.  “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others.  Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

# 5  When you pray, do not be like them
Hypocrites and gentiles (unbelievers).
Matthew 6:5-8 ESV
“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites.  For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.   But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.

And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.  “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

When you Pray - not a command to pray – assumes you will pray – no specific instructions on how, just what not to do.

Bow head? Close Eyes?  Fold hands?  Kneel?  Stand?  Sit?

# 6  When you fast, do not look gloomy
Matthew 6:16 ESV
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others.  Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

When you fast, not a command to fast.  Fasting is a good thing but not for the wrong reasons.

# 7  Do not lay up selfish treasures on earth.
Matthew 6:19-21 ESV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

What do you treasure most?
He is not saying don’t be wealthy, but what do you treasure?

Remember the rich young ruler who had kept all the law but went away sorrowful rather than sell all that he had to give to the poor.  Luke 18:18-23

Luke 6:38 ESV  Give, and it will be given to you.  Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap.  For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

# 8  Do not be anxious (Do not worry.)
Matthew 6:31-34 ESV
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’  or ‘What shall we drink?’  or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.  Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Matthew 6:31-34 ERV
"Don't worry and say, 'What will we eat?'  or 'What will we drink?'  or 'What will we wear?'

That's what those people who don't know God are always thinking about. Don't worry, because your Father in heaven knows that you need all these things.

# 9  Do not think that I have come to bring peace.
Matthew 10:34 ESV
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth.  I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

# 10  Do not be afraid of overwhelming blessings
Luke 5:8-10 ESV
And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.  But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”  For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.
And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”

# 11 Do not stop others who minister differently
Luke 9:49-50 ESV
John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.”

But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”

# 12 Do not invite just friends, relatives, and rich neighbors
Luke 14:12-14 ESV
He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid.  But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

# 13 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
John 3:6-8 ESV
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’  The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.  So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

# 14  Do not work for the food that perishes
John 6:26-29 ESV
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.  For on him God the Father has set his seal.”

Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”

Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

#  15  Do not believe me if I am not doing the works of my Father
John 10:37-38 ESV
If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.”

# 16  Do not rejoice that I have given you authority to tread on serpents.
Luke 10:19-20 ESV
Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.  Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

The Prayer of Jesus

I do not ask that you take them out of the world.

John 17:14-19 ESV
I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.  I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.  Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.  As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.

And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
