People Used to Care - They're Just too Busy Now
Have you ever seen a Sasquatch or Bigfoot? Most people have not and many would argue that no such animal exists. There are folks who are busily trying to prove that they do exist while others are just working to prove the veracity of reported sightings. Bigfoot reports make for interesting folklore and semi-scientific reality TV shows. Some believe that the creatures may actually live hidden the the Appalachian Mountains near us.
I remember the first time I visited a new barber in Remington, Va shortly after moving from Pennsylvania. There was a framed newspaper page from the Remington Times on the wall that. I believe it was from the 40's. The front page feature story was about a bank robbery of the Remington Bank (It no longer exists.) The robbers blew up the safe but got no money. The story was interesting but what really caught my attention was a small new item about a local farmer who a sheep stolen. It was stolen by an extremely tall person covered in hair. No suspects were listed and no one was caught. No trace of the sheep was found. I wondered at the time if this simple news article about a tall hairy thief was actually an early Bigfoot sighting not recognized as such by the small town newspaper editor.
Have you ever seen "Searching for Bigfoot" shows on Animal Planet, Discovery, or National Geographic. The one with less of a scientific approach take a kind of reality show approach. They remind me of when I was a teenager in boy scouts.
On camping trips we would take the uninitiated scouts on Snipe hunts. The newbies were taken and left by themselves in the woods with a sack and stick to catch Snipe as we, the drivers, left them "to drive the Snipe toward them." They were instructed to make certain noises and call the Snipe, "Here Snipe! here Snipe, Snipe, Snipe" until one could be caught in the bag and club with a stick. Unbeknownst to them, we, the drivers, went back to camp to sit around the comfort of a cozy campfire. The Searching for Bigfoot reality type shows remind me of upscale Snipe hunts. Persons are spread out in the woods with two way radios and night vision cameras to wait, bang on trees, or make loud noises waiting for a Bigfoot to venture into camera range. The shows drum up a lot of excitement over imaginary or unrelated sounds but never seem to come up an actual verifiable sighting.
Progressive Insurance has developed a commercial featuring a Sasquatch (Bigfoot) who wants to be seen and photographed but seems to have become irrelevant to those around him. The video commercial title calls him a "Sadsquatch" rather than "Sasquatch." I find the video to be quite humorous. Bigfoot has a name. It's not Bigfoot! He's sad because people are too busy to notice him. In a portion of the video not normally shown, Darrell sees an upside and says that now he will have more time to work on his screen play. He offers to let Flo read it, but she too, is too busy. Do we sometimes get to busy to spend adequate time in our faith walk? Has our relationship with Jesus lost something?

Liberty Through Jesus
17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4:17-21 (ESV)
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:31-36 (ESV)
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17 (ESV)
